Deans address nursing faculty shortage
Friday, June 19, 2009
There’s a storm brewing on the cloudy horizon of human capital in health care. The nursing profession, beleaguered for years by an aging patient population, dwindling numbers of nurses and higher technical expectations, now faces another challenge: a shortage of educators teaching the discipline.
Four deans from nursing programs across the state — Nadine Coudret, RN, EdD, University of Southern Indiana College of Nursing and Health Professions; Mary McHugh, RN, PhD, University of Indianapolis; Gail Sprigler RN, MSN, Ivy Tech Community College; and Marion Broome, RN, PhD, IUPUI School of Nursing — participated in a roundtable discussion to share insights into the faculty shortage. They also talked about what they and other state organizations are doing to address it.
