Wayne Memorial Hospital is one of the few hospitals in North Carolina --and among only 10% of hospitals in the country -- implementing a system of checking bar codes on medication dispensed to patients to further enhance safety measures. Almost every medication from the hospital pharmacy has a label with a supermarket-style bar code that can be matched to patients. The drug is compared to a patient's wristband, which also has a bar code. A hand-held scanner/computer compares the drug to the patient's medical records and indicates if there is any reason that the drug should not be administered. Wayne Memorial Hospital was one of the first hospitals in Eastern North Carolina to install the new LightSpeed CT scanner from GE Medical Systems. The new scanner, a diagnostic machine that can scan a patient in 30 seconds - compared to previous models that took about 3 minutes. The CT exam creates images analogous to a single slice of bread from a whole loaf. The word "slice" is often used to describe a view of patient anatomy. The new CT scanner is referred to as a "16 slice" and replaced the less sophisticated scanner that was referred to as "single slice." SPECIALTIES
